This year, we are honoured to welcome Tima Kurdi, whose two-year-old nephew Alan Kurdi was photographed lifeless on a beach in September 2015, during a desperate attempt to escape a war zone by any means possible.
The photograph of Alan’s body was
shown around the world and brought international attention to the refugee crisis in Syria.
Tima has turned her pain and heartbreak into social activism, advocating for ordinary people to raise their voices in the hopes of creating a better future;
one where a young life is not so needlessly lost.
