The Fire Fighting program is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and practical skills required to perform as a firefighter adhering to the professional organizational policies and procedures of a fire department. Learners develop skills and knowledge required to work safely and effectively as part of a fire service team similar to that of most large municipal fire departments. Today’s Firefighter is involved in an occupation where a variety of circumstances may be encountered with each response. The scope of firefighting goes beyond controlling or extinguishing fires; it includes rescue activities, responding to hazardous material incidents and participation in fire prevention activities. 

Upon successful completion of this program, participants are eligible to take the exams for NFPA 1001 (Firefighter I and II) as well as the NFPA 1072 (Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations). Graduates will also write the IFSAC/Pro Board theory and practical examination in concert with the NB Office of the Fire Marshal.

This Program is delivered at the NBCC Fire Training Center, which is operational year round providing training to Firefighters from across the Maritime Provinces. The teaching and learning environment is intended to replicate the standards and practices found at a fire station which demands professionalism, teamwork and a commitment to continuous learning.

Pre-Requisites

  • Clean Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector 
  • Pass a Physical Fitness Test set out by NBCC prior to course start date. The C.P.A.T (Candidate Physical Ability Test) certification or equivalent will be accepted if it is a current 6 month certification prior to the program commencement.
  • Be age 18 or older by program start date
  • Hold a Valid Motor Vehicle License
  • High School Diploma or Adult High School Diploma or GED Diploma of High School Equivalency or Essential Skills Achievement Pathway: Post-Secondary Entry High School 
  • Complete a pre-qualifying interview process to determine suitability for training.
  • If your language is not English, NBCC will require proof of English language competency

Program Cost

$15,000

Includes:

  • Tuition 
  • Uniform set of 1 dress shirt/2 t-shirts/1 cargo pant/1 ballcap (Students can purchase additional uniform clothing from an approved supplier)
  • Gear rental
  • Exam Costs are included during the duration of the program

Additional Costs/Fees

  • $300 Seat Deposit (non-refundable), due within 30 days of acceptance, applied to tuition
  • Books: approximately $350
  • Black Steel Toed Work Boots – 8” minimum
