What Does “First Generation Student” Mean?

A first-generation student is someone whose parents or guardians did not go to college or university. This means you are the first in your family to take this big step! Being first can feel exciting, but it can also feel a little unfamiliar. That’s why NBCC has supports to help you feel confident and ready for success.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Am I considered a first generation student?

You may be a first‑generation student if your parent(s) or guardian(s) did not attend college or university. Even if they went for a short time or took a few courses, you might still qualify. If you’re not sure, that’s okay—we can help you figure it out.

What if I’m not 100% sure I want to go to college yet?

That’s completely normal. Many  students feel unsure at first. You don’t need to have everything decided. We’re here to answer questions and help you explore your options, even if you’re just starting to think about college.

Do I have to be “good at school” to apply?

You do not need to be perfect at school. College is about learning and growing, not already knowing everything. Support is available to help you build skills and confidence once you start.

I’m worried I won’t fit in. Is that normal?

Many students feel this way. Feeling unsure or nervous is common when you’re trying something new. NBCC works to create a welcoming environment where students from all backgrounds can feel supported and included.

What if my family doesn’t know how college works?

Your family can still support you, even if they haven’t been to college themselves. NBCC can help explain the process and answer questions for both students and families.

I don’t know how the application process works. Will someone help me?

Yes. You can get help with every step of the application process, including choosing a program, filling out forms, and understanding next steps. You don’t have to do it alone.

Is college going to be too expensive?

Cost is a common concern. There are supports available to help with fees, bursaries, and financial planning. We can help you understand what help is available and what options might work best for you.

Will using extra supports make me stand out?

No. Supports are available to all students and are part of being successful in college. Using help means you’re taking care of yourself and your goals.

What if I start and realize I need more help later?

That’s okay. You can reach out for support at any time—before you apply, after you’re accepted, or once you’ve started classes. Support is flexible and there when you need it.
