Update on lockdown incident at NBCC’s Saint John campus

At 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, a lockdown alert was issued for NBCC’s Saint John campus on Grandview Avenue. The lockdown alert was automatically distributed to relevant audiences via email, text message, automated phone call system, social media, and the campus public address system.

Saint John Police responded and investigated the call. Police determined there was no threat to safety and issued an all-clear at 11:14 a.m.

NBCC staff have investigated the cause of the alarm in conjunction with our service contractors. We have determined that this incident was a false alarm resulting from a technical error in the public address system. We have concluded that there was no malicious intent.

The system programming is being updated to eliminate the risk of this error reoccurring.

Safety is our priority. We are grateful for the cooperation of our staff, students, and visitors, as well as the support of Saint John Police, during this incident. We recognize that this was a stressful experience and apologize for this experience.
