Research in mobile technology can address how to receive, with limited bandwidth, large amounts of constantly changing data and how to process it rapidly, securely and more effectively by using platforms designed specifically for mobile devices. This research focus area is of natural interest to NBCC as we offer over 15 programs in the Information Communications Technology (ICT) field, many of which include internships and co-op placements where students can potentially work on applied research and innovation projects.
NBCC will enhance its learning environment and focus its applied research program on the technical and design issues inherent in the evolution of the mobile & ubiquitous computing technologies.
By consulting with stakeholders in New Brunswick's information and communications technology community, NBCC Applied Research and Innovation identified Mobile-First as a research priority and a natural fit for NBCC which offers over 15 programs in information communications technology.
In spring 2013, NBCC was awarded grant funding through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), along with matching industry funds, to establish an inaugural Industrial
Research Chair in Mobile First Technology.
As the NSERC Industrial Research Chair, Dr. William McIver Jr. (Bill) is responsible for conducting
research and working collaboratively with partners in the information and communications technology sector to develop advanced mobile first technology.
With Dr. McIver’s guidance, NBCC will enhance its learning environment and focus its applied research program on the technical and design issues inherent in the evolution of the mobile technologies. Students will be able to take advantage of internships
and co-op placements where they can potentially work on applied research and innovation projects.
The research will also benefit industry in New Brunswick. Mobile First solutions will directly and positively impact the competitive position of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in New Brunswick and position them to take advantage of present and future
opportunities within this sector. Key among these will be NBCC's current private-sector partners in the Mobile First Technology Initiative.
