FREDERICTON – Internationally-renowned hoop dancer James Jones will be among the Indigenous artists showcased at Gelu’lg Maw-a-paw, a gala evening in support of the New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) Indigenous Student Bursary Fund. Gelu’lg (Gel-uulk) Maw-a-paw (Mow-a-baw) means “awesome gathering” in the Mi’kmaq (Gelu’lg) and Wolastoqiyik (Maw-a-paw) languages. 

“Bringing together traditional Indigenous hoop dancing and contemporary urban dance, James Jones’ unique and high-energy performances are a perfect fit for this ‘awesome gathering,’” said Suzanne Desrosiers, Vice President Employee and Student Development at NBCC. 

A finalist on So You Think You Can Dance Canada, Jones has performed with artists such as k-os and Snoop Dogg. He has toured the world with Juno award-winning group A Tribe Called Red.

Gelu’lg Maw-a-paw will also feature Indigenous visual and performing artists from across New Brunswick. The full lineup will be announced later this fall.

“NBCC is committed to welcoming more Indigenous learners to our College,” said Desrosiers. “This evening will be a wonderful celebration of Indigenous culture while at the same time raising funds to create more opportunities for Indigenous learners.”

Gelu’lg Maw-a-paw has been made possible through the generous support of Stewart McKelvey, Enbridge, J.D. Irving and the Joint Economic Development Initiative (JEDI). 

Gelu’lg Maw-a-paw takes place Thursday, Nov. 23, at the Delta Fredericton. Tickets can be purchased online at www.nbcc.ca/gala.
