Government of New Brunswick

Firefighter certification is not a mandatory requirement to becoming a firefighter in the province of New Brunswick. It does, however, allow applicants to be tested against, and obtain certification in various standards that are recognized in other provincial, territorial and international jurisdictions.

Firefighters who aspire to obtain International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) certification through the New Brunswick Firefighter Certification Program must satisfy the program requirements, which are based on National Fire Protection Association standards, and must be tested for competency.

Applications and forms for certification testing are found below, as well as the criteria needed to achieve each level of certification. For more information on fire service certification, contact the Office of the Fire Marshal’s Firefighter Certification Program Co-ordinator.
