Tech Talk:  Novel Interaction Techniques and Multimodal Feedback

Abstract

This talk will provide an overview of novel interaction techniques using capacitive and pressure based sensing. Capacitive sensors, used on multitouch displays. are capable of providing more detailed context information, such as pitch and roll, for each touch event. Force Sensing Resistors are relatively cheap sensors that can detect the amount of force that is applied to them. I will discuss some lessons learned from developing non-visual interaction techniques using these sensors. Additionally I will describe some Initial work investigating interaction techniques for a roller derby training aid with a particular focus on low-cost methods for prototype development.

Bio

Over the last 5 years I have been working on various projects investigating novel interaction techniques for mobile devices at Glasgow, Helsinki and Dundee Universities. My research often requires the development of hardware and software prototypes and making use of vibrotactile feedback.
