NBCC recognized with Canada’s Volunteer Award

New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) was recognized with a Canada Volunteer Award last evening at a ceremony in Ottawa. The College was the Atlantic regional recipient for the business leadership award.

“NBCC has a vision of transforming lives and communities,” said Marilyn Luscombe, NBCC President and CEO. “An opportunity to develop as community leaders is part of the NBCC Advantage that we offer our learners as well as our employees. It’s embodied in our Robertson Institute for Community Leadership.”

Launched in 2014, NBCC’s award-winning Robertson Institute for Community Leadership ensures that each NBCC student, in every program across the College has the opportunity to develop important interpersonal skills such as communications, teamwork and creative problem solving through volunteer and service learning opportunities.

“We are honoured to accept this award,” said Luscombe. “But the credit for this award goes to NBCC’s students and employees who give back to our communities in so many ways.”

Since 2014, NBCC students and staff contributed more than 36,000 hours to 675 projects through six College-wide service days. This is in addition to numerous projects and activities that classes undertake throughout the year. NBCC also provides employees with two days of paid leave each year to volunteer with community organizations.  So far this year, 120 employees have used volunteer leave to contribute more than 800 hours to their communities.

The Canada Volunteer Award allows recipients to make a $5,000 contribution to the cause of their choice. NBCC will donate this portion of the award to United Ways in the College regions.

“It is, of course, hard to pick just one cause,“ said Luscombe. “We have a longstanding relationship with the United Way and a shared vision of transforming lives. Supporting the United Way allows us to support multiple organizations across the province.”

Presented by the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, Canada’s Volunteer Awards recognize and bring national prominence to the contributions individuals, not-for-profit organizations and businesses make to their communities through volunteering.
