New Brunswick Community College tackles student hunger with Giving Tuesday campaign

FREDERICTON – New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) is joining the #GivingTuesdayCA movement to raise funds and awareness for their student food banks, known as Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard. On Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, supporters can donate $5 to NBCC student food banks by texting  FOOD to 45678.

“It’s difficult for students to focus on their education when they are wondering how they will feed themselves or their families,” said Marilyn Luscombe, NBCC President and CEO. “With hundreds of our students accessing our campus food banks each year, Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard is essential in ensuring our students have the support they need to succeed.”

NBCC staff and student volunteers run and stock the campus food banks each year. The Giving Tuesday Campaign will put an extra focus on this vital service and provide additional support to each of the six NBCC campus food banks.

“Food insecurity can be a serious barrier to education for many students. In 2014, more than 27,000 Canadian students a month accessed food banks,” said Tom Meadus, NBCC Director of Advancement. “Together, on Giving Tuesday we can tear down those barriers for NBCC students.”

Giving Tuesday is an international movement that uses social media to raise awareness and encourage everyone to give back to local causes following the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping weekend.
