Melissa Graham

Class of 2014 - Saint John Campus - Machinist

A machinist, trailblazer, and a mentor

In her early 30s, Melissa Graham was ready for a career change and enrolled in the Machinist program at NBCC Saint John Campus. Undeterred as a female in a male-dominated industry, she graduated and was the first female machinist to join the team at Maritime Industrial Machining.

Melissa volunteers as a mentor with the Women’s Equality Trades & Tech Gala events around New Brunswick. Her hope is to inspire other females in the province to consider a career in the trades.

I was determined to make school the beginning of a major change in life. I am so glad I did.

Why did College work for you?

College worked for me because it offers courses of all different lengths. I chose a program that was one year long. In the grand scheme of things I could commit to one year. The college was so helpful when it came to enrolling as well.  I am happy I took the chance and went back to school.

What do you tell someone who asks about NBCC?

I would recommend NBCC because in a short period of time I was able to start a brand new career path. If you are looking for a change in careers, NBCC is a fantastic start. They offer a hands on learning approach which is how I learn. You have your classroom time and then can apply that knowledge immediately. They have equipment and machines that would be used in the workforce and we got to familiarize ourselves every day with this equipment.

How has NBCC impacted your career/life?

NBCC changed my life for the better. In 3 short years, I left a secure full time job, enrolled and graduated from school, successfully completed my apprenticeship block 3, and I am working in my field, in an environment where I learn something every single day. It's all because I took that first step in wanting to better myself and go to school. Graduating made me feel proud of myself. I wasn't deterred by being the only female in my class and I was also the oldest. I was determined to make school the beginning of a major change in life. I am so glad I did.
